Nikon Corporation, Japan's largest maker of high-end digital cameras, said on Tuesday that its quarterly profit soared. Nikon recorded a group net profit of 1.72 billion yen ($15.54 million) in the three months to June 30, compared with a 69 million yen profit in the same quarter last year. For the year ending March 31, Nikon expects net income to gain almost eightfold to 19 billion yen, keeping its forecast unchanged from May. Sales will probably rise 38 percent to 700 billion yen.

Earnings at Nikon have been supported by brisk sales of a high-end model launched in March. Called the D70, Nikon's lowest priced digital single-lens reflex camera has been a hit with professional photographers and serious amateurs.

Digital SLRs are a key earnings driver for Canon and Nikon because they produce very high margins.

(Very high margins... Dat betekent dat er nog veel ruimte is voor prijsverlagingen in de nabije toekomst)
